Demographics

A detailed demographic report is available upon request.

  • A highly diverse audience of Bay Area residents and visitors attend the SF Theater Festival. The rich, multi-cultural diversity of the Bay Area theater scene is reflected in the audience. Overall, oursurveys show attendance is about 65% white and 35% non-white. Ages range from small children to seniors. Many families attend.
  • By exposing theater groups to new audiences, we expect growth in attendance for the groups, thus strengthening them. Because the Festival is free, community members who would not otherwise be able to attend theater are able to experience and become enriched from it. They also are made aware of low-cost performances and “pay what you can” performances. The festival creates access and provides outreach attracting non-traditional audiences such as younger people, those with lower income, and those in underserved communities.
  • Children and young adults experience the thrill of attending live stage theater, resulting in a positive feeling towards theatergoing when they become adults. They are exposed to new ideas and a variety of cultures beyond their own.
  • By mobilizing the energies of 80-100 theater groups and solo performers, the event brings community attention to live theater, while encouraging theatergoing and expanding theater audiences.
